What Are LED Beacons and Why Are They Important?

A beacon – also known as a warning light – is a visual signalling device mounted on vehicles to increase visibility and ensure safety. Through its rotating or flashing light pattern, it warns other road users of a vehicle in a special or hazardous situation.

LED beacons are the modern, energy-efficient and durable successors of traditional halogen models. They consume less power, last longer, and are more resistant to vibrations, rain, and dust.

Beacons are used across many sectors: from emergency services and utility companies to agricultural vehicles, transport, construction sites, and traffic signalling. Each application requires visibility, recognition, and legal compliance. In Belgium, specific regulations determine who may use which colour.

In short, a LED beacon is essential for any vehicle that combines safety, visibility, and legal conformity. Whether you're transporting people, materials, or information – with the right beacon, you’re always visible and compliant.

Which Beacon Do I Need?

Halogen vs LED – What’s the Difference?

Although LED is the modern standard, halogen remains populair. Halogen beacons are robust, modular, and easy to repair – all components are replaceable. The combination of a halogen bulb and rotating mirror offers a classic, powerful rotating effect that can surpass certain LED models. LED beacons excel in energy efficiency, lifespan, and compact size.

Mounting Options – Fixed, Flexible Tube, or Magnetic

AEB offers beacons with different mounting systems. You can choose:

Choosing the right mount improves both safety and the beacon’s service life.

Class 1 or Class 2 – Legal Light Intensity

The ECE R65 standard defines how visible and powerful a beacon must be. It distinguishes between Class 1 and Class 2, each with its own applications:

  • Class 1: ideal for standard use in normal light conditions. They offer reliable visibility for vehicles such as agricultural machines, transport vehicles and maintenance vehicles that do not need to stand out continuously.
  • Class 2: designed for intensive use in bright sunlight or poor weather conditions. These lights have a day and night mode for maximum visibility without dazzling – perfect for emergency services and traffic guidance.

Choice of Colour and Lens Design

Most beacons are available in different light colours, such as amber, blue or red, depending on the application and legal permission. You can also choose from various lens colours and textures: from completely clear lenses that fully transmit the internal light to ribbed or coloured versions that distribute the light differently or visually soften it.

The chosen lens structure has a direct effect on the light distribution, visibility and visual effect of the beacon. Ribbed lenses often provide wider and less dazzling light spread, while clear lenses deliver focused light with a sharper flash.
